BLOGGE(RED) Day 32

Tuesday. National bank holiday today - Tanzanian independence from British colony. How many years ago? I'm not sure. Low activity in hospital. But I still went in for obs&gynae ward round, checked on mothers... Post c-section, antenatal clinic, gynae surgical patients from yesterday. The mother who had twins yesterday... One of them had died today =( Did a malaria check on a pregnant woman with fever, turns out she's malaria positive (p. falciparum). Start ALU in pregnancy, is safe. Relatively short day today which is good. Got the next part of my O&G project, to do some number crunching for maternal mortality rates at the hospital in 2009, as well as the major causes of maternal death. Much fun, reminds me of my EBM project last year... In case you're curious, the maternal mortality in Teule hospital, Tanzania is 781 deaths per 100,000 births. Compare this to Australia's rate of 8.4 mothers dying per 100,000, Afghanistan's rate of 1 in 7 (1300 per 100,000) and the developing world average of 450 per 100,000. VERY high. *violin music plays*

Chapati lady wasn't making any chapati + egg today, so had instant noodles at home instead. Later brought some kangas to the tailor to get made into shirts. Spent the afternoon relaxing and doing bits of the O&G project. Penina, the clinical officer who lives with us, cooked the most awesome dinner for us tonight. There was chapati, ugali, beans and vegies. It was way better than the stuff we get on the street. Finished it off with freshly squeezed mango and passionfruit juice. After dinner we visited Robert's grandfather's house (he is the hospital warden). Came home, played poker, and headed to bed.
