Tues. Spent the morning on the paediatrics ward today. Quite interesting, the ward round comes to you. We were seated at a table in the middle of the ward, and it was a bit like an outpatient clinic, the mother would bring her child and sit there while the doctor assessed the child. Saw some interesting things, lots of severe malaria, some (not many) kwashiorkor, a 4 month old baby failing to thrive who has a vibratory humming systolic heart murmur, and also an 8 month old with a large growing mandibular mass... They think its Burkitt's lymphoma, but I think it looks more like a cystic hygroma. Referred to bigger hospital. Also a lot of run off the mill pneumonias, gastroenteritis, etc.
Went to Tanga today, the dalla-dalla was very slow. Kept stopping at so many places, and had to wait for half an hour at one place. Was very annoying. Took 2 hours to get there. Went to the bank at 2.58pm to exchange my traveller's cheques (which I've been trying to do for the last 2 weeks but couldn't find the right bank, as most banks don't accept it)... Finally found the bank - it closed at 3pm and they wouldn't let me in despite a few minutes to go! Next week... Another attempt. Probably should have brought cash rather than traveller's cheques...
Went to internet cafe where I updated the last 14 days of blog in one hit... Took around 2 hours because of the slow speeds, but finally done! Went to this amazing indian place for dinner, called Exotica but renamed to Seaview restaurant or something... No wonder no one knew what it was when we asked for directions... We had to wait an hour for the food, but it was absolutely divine. One of the best meals I have had in Tanzania. Probably equal first with Pemba's fish in coconut curry last week!! Would definitely go back there, but the wait is really long. We played poker to pass the time. Wasn't too pricey either... Around 7000 shillings (AUD $6.30) for a fairly large meal.
Took a taxi back with our favourite taxi driver Mbali - who is around our age and plays lots of really cool early 2000s music.
