BLOGGE(RED) Day 27

Thursday. Paediatrics again, very severely unwell patient came in. Age 3, severe malaria, in a coma with a fever of 41 degrees. GCS 5/15. Crackles everywhere, audible from across the room. He'd only had a fever for 2 days. He was put on the antimalarial trial and the fluid resuscitation trial. Given antibiotics (ceftriaxone) as well as artesunate for malaria. Hopefully he improves. The rest of the ward round was relatively uneventful, similar patients as yesterday, just reviewing them and discharging many. Dr Lorenz again, gave us a lot of power in deciding who stays and goes. He encourages a lot of questions and teaches very well.

Had a nap in the afternoon, and the others went to buy groceries, we made vegetable curry, rice and chapati for the mzungu dinner tonight, which turned out really well, even though the rice was a bit burned.

We had a kerosene stove that got soaking wet as it rained heavily for some time in the afternoon as well. Managed to get it working and cooked chapati. The dinner was a success. Check out this photo: you can see the huge rain drops!

Came home and no electricity again! This power situation is getting a bit annoying, it means its hard to get to sleep because the fans are not working... Hot! We had to entertain ourselves somehow, Hari and I drew our names in alcohol gel on the ground and set fire to it. Looks so cool!! Then we sat around a mosquito coil and chatted till about 11pm and went to bed. Going to Peponi tomorrow!!
